It starts with some riffing and snare hits, pauses, then kicks you in the dick, a great statement of intent for the new album. "Lost in the Sound of Separation" is a great refinement of the sound laid down in "Define The Great Line" and really hits hard in the right places. "Too Bright To See, Too Loud To Hear" is another stand out song and really sets Underoath's song writing aside from the rest of the pack, building up with soft melodies and culminating in a crushing ass ult of power chords and Spencer's emotional singing. I really like DESA and "Routes to Rapture" along with the other free EP "Sirens and Safety Glass" represents thier best material to date. Its a grower, its not as instantly satisfying as the previous albums. As always thier experimentation and blending of musical forms can take a few listens to really appriciate but has a really deep, epic quality to it. Ocean and The Sun is a real progressive step up towards a Mars Volta level of experimentation and depth, with the title track "The Ocean and the Sun" sounding particually reminisent, but the albums lacks the thumping pulse of "Tiger and The Duke".

http://www.thesoundofanimalsfighting.com/
http://www.myspace.com/thesoundofanimalsfighting

Better than the previous 2 albums? They blend synth and high energy instruments really intelligently and nothing sounds tacked on. The synth compliments the music as opposed to awkwardly shoehorning in some lame rave beats (Enter Shakari anyone?) and SEA create some really interesting atmospheric instrumental moments. Many bands have tried splicing together electronica and Post Hardcore/Emo, most have failed where few have succedded but count SEA in the latter.
